Jane Doe starts out strong, builds atmosphere with genuinely creepy scenes and manages to keep its mystery and secrets just long enough to satisfy. Much of this is due to the moody music which probably made half the film!Sure there is the occasional i-already-know-whats-coming-next/ clichéd shock scene, but such sins are easily forgiven within seconds since the intense atmosphere of this film pulls the viewer back in you appreciate classic oldschool flicks like John Carpenters 'The Fog', Jane Doe will not disappoint. Bayangkan, ada sosok mayat, seseorang yang sudah meninggal dunia, dan kamu harus membedah mayat tersebut satu demi satu, mengambil bagian-bagian dari mayat tersebut untuk menganalisa dan mencari tahu apa yang menyebabkan kematiannya… Itulah yang membuat banyak orang enggan ketika orang yang mereka kasihi harus diotopsi jenazahnya, kecuali benar-benar terpaksa misalnya untuk mencari tahu sebab kematiannya. Dan ini adalah sesuatu yang terjadi di film ini. Ketika seorang wanita tidak dikenal ditemukan di sebuah tempat pembunuhan ia dikirim ke tempat otopsi milik Tommy, seorang koroner di kota tersebut. Tommy dibantu oleh Austin, anaknya dalam menganalisa jenazah tersebut. Akan tetapi Tommy dan Austin mulai menemukan keanehan demi keanehan semakin jauh mereka menjalani proses otopsi. Ada sesuatu yang aneh dengan gadis misterius ini, tetapi apa? Siapa dia? Film ini disutradarai oleh Andre Ovredal yang sebelumnya dikenal dengan film Trollhunter di 2010. Karyanya Trollhunter diakui sebagai sebuah film horor Skandinavia yang bagus, dan Ovredal siap membawa kemampuannya ke Hollywood melalui film ini. Hasilnya memang oke. Dalam tempo waktu 90 menit, Ovredal mampu menjaga intensitas sepanjang film. Trik Ovredal dalam membuat film ini adalah dengan membuat kita peduli kepada dua karakter utamanya Tommy dan Austin adalah dua orang pria baik-baik yang menjalankan tugas mereka. Mereka punya masalah – sebagaimana semua keluarga punya masalah – but they work out those problems together. Melihat mereka secara perlahan tetapi pasti diganggu oleh aura mistis sang gadis misterius terasa mencekap dan disturbing. Saya juga suka bagaimana Ovredal membuat film ini terasa bak sebuah tontonan yang tak nyaman. Tidak ada gore apapun di awal film tetapi cara Ovredal memakai shot yang berulang kali menyorot wajah hampa artis Olwen Kelly terasa disturbing. Kelly tidak bergerak dan tak memakai ekspresi apapun, but she made the viewers uncomfortable. Kenapa? Karena pada dasarnya semua orang takut akan kematian dan keentahapaan yang ada setelah kematian. Itulah yang membuat melihat shotup jenazah, apalagi dengan mata terbuka, terasa menganggu. Film ini memang sedikit kehilangan unsur merindingnya memasuki sepertiga akhir, tetapi karena durasi film ini hanya 90 menit, ia keburu berakhir sebelum penonton benar-benar kehilangan unsur scare-nya. Pada akhirnya dengan durasi tayang yang pas, The Autopsy of Jane Doe menjadi sebuah film horor efektif yang creepy. Sebuah sukses bagi debut Ovredal di Hollywood, dan sebuah film horor yang bisa saya rekomendasikan pada penggemar genre ini.
